EVENINGS OUT

Gays and straights mingle

at erotic convention

by Doreen Cudnik

Almost anything went on the weekend of February 9-12 as the Ramada-University Hotel and Conference Center in Columbus GONZALEZ

played host to the "Anything For Love '95 First Annual Convention of Eroticism." Hundreds of gay, straight, bisexual and transgendered singles and couples attended the event, complete with a fashion show, workshops, vendors from all over the country, and other fun-filled activities.

The event, sponsored by the Eros Group

of Cincinnati, was a wonderful success, as people of various backgrounds and sexual orientations mingled amicably in an open celebration of all things erotic.

Many alternative styles and fetishes were represented at the event. The workshops, as diverse as the attendees, included topics such as piercing, Tantric sexuality, erotic art, corsetry, beginning bondage, full time S/M relationships and how to publish lesbian porn. Workshops were led by people considered experts in their field, including Heather Findlay, editor-in-chief of Girlfriends magazine; noted author, editor and sexuality activist Cecilia Tan; and Paul C, one of the leaders in the fetish wear and leather industry.

The weekend climaxed with a gala costume ball, with convention-goers dressed up in their very best fetish wear and costumes. Prizes were given in 19 different categories, among them "Best Male/Female Leather," "Best Slave/Submissive," "Best Corset," "Best Master/Dominant," and everybody's favorite "Most Outrageous."

Eros Group managing director Holly Teague said that future events are being planned. "Eros raises funds for the advancement of human sexuality through events like this one and special activities," Teague said. "Our mission is to introduce the scene and its nuances through open minds and humor."

A quote by Robert Louis Stevenson, prominently displayed on a photograph at the vendor table of Gonzalez Photography, summed up the spirit of the conference: "To know what you prefer, instead of humbly saying amen to what the world tells you you ought to prefer, is to have kept your soul alive."

Confessions of a bad girl: Women's night at Flex

by Tamara Murphy

I'm sure the energy was more than a little different. No one seemed intent on cruising; just hanging out, blowing off some steam, and being just a little bit "bad." Many of us were with girlfriends and lovers, some with buddies, and some alone, but everyone seemed to enjoy the camaraderie. Collective can have several meanings, you know.

All I can say is thank Goddess. It's about time that someone realized that not every queer in Cleveland comes equipped with a penis-some of us had to buy ours. It's also about time the lesbian community realized that fun is not a dirty word. Neither is leather No one seemed intent on

for that matter, or, God-

dess forbid, sex. On

Tuesday, February 7,

the Cleveland bath-

cruising; just hanging out,

The most refreshing thing was the freedom. To be bad. To break the rules. To revel in

blowing off some steam, and being sensual. To be

house and gym Flex being just a little bit “bad.” opened its doors for the

first time to women

who recognize and celebrate these basic truths.

Some 32 women came out to play that night, most of us the boldest of our receptive circles, representing many timid friends who wanted a first-hand account of the experience before they would venture out. And, for what I'm told is the first time, we were welcomed with open arms. The club was beautiful, well prepared for the invasion, and, for you hygiene-cautious, wonderfully clean. None of the horror stories I've heard about "the baths" applied. Granted,

with other dykes in a place where there was nothing to "process." And the club is large

enough that your own plans for the evening don't have to interfere with anyone else's.

Now for the really good news. Next month, they're doing it again. Really catering to the lesbian crowd, too. They're even having a potluck. So whether it's for the gym, the whirlpool, the movies, or the dungeon, or if it's nothing more than a chance to hang out in a politic-free zone before gearing yourself up for the daily grind, come on out on March 7. And don't panic. You don't have to be bad. Not unless you want to. ♡
